Nathan has been seeing a counselor for the past few weeks due to very inappropriate behavior he did a number of times. It has been a difficult road we have been on and has turned our lives upside down.
However, the Lord has worked in this situation and we finally have a diagnosis for him. We have dealt with so many different speech, learning, delay, and medical issues his whole life and never really had any concrete answers. Nothing seemed to fit and I've always wondered how one child can deal with so many different independent issues. We have found that all of these separate things actually are part and parcel of the same problem: Fragile X Syndrome. He has to take a blood test to confirm this.
Here are some of the symptoms:
1. Elongated face; large, bulging ears; prominent chin and forehead; high arched palate, flat feet, and other issues.
2. Unusually flexible joints, seizures and mitral valve prolapse, etc.
3. Cognitive and intellectual problems, including mental retardation, learning disabilities and abnormal speech.
4. Behavioral problems, including hyperactivity, attention difficulties, avoidance of eye contact and other autistic like behaviors, violent outbursts (especially in teenage boys), and an unusual sensitivity to environmental stimuli such as sights, sounds, smells and touch.
He will need life long supervision, given his mental capabilities, but at least we know what we are dealing with. He is at about the mental level of a 7-8 year old.
Please keep us all in your prayers because our world is turned upside down. We still have church situations we are dealing with too which are causing a tremendous amount of stress. Yet, we are thanking God that even in the midst of this storm, He is faithful and is giving us the help we need.

Terri - this is such sad news and I am so sorry that sush a lovely lady (& family) have so much to cope with.
You will remain in my prayers.
It is good that you finally have a diagnosis, that is medically proven by the blood test, perhaps now you can move forward with the veil of uncertainty lifted just a little.
As for your church issues - well I really feel for you here and hope that your church family support you through this very painful period in your lives.
Just because you are the church leaders does not protect you from life and I hope that people will rally round and love you in the same way you have loved and nurtured them.
I understand if you decide not to publish this message :) But be sure that God is with you & many of us are praying for you.

Many of us are indeed praying for you Terri. I so hope that Nathan will get the help and guidance that he needs, and that you and your husband will find the strength to go on the path with him, guiding him as you always have.
Terri, my heart goes out to you and your family. Even though we have never truly met, I consider you a friend.
I will be praying for you and Dan. And specifically for Nathan.
Isn't it awesome that we ALL can be children of The Most High God?!! Even with our imperfections and scars?
He loves us regardless of our fragile, crumpled bodies!!
I pray that you will feel God's peace envelope you and His arms hugging you continually through this storm!
I am so sorry for the trials you are going through. I will be praying for you.

Terri, I'm sorry you are going through all this. You are all in my prayers. x
It must be a relief to have some answers, though I am sorry for the circumstances that prompted the testing. It will definitely help in planning for Nathan's long-term care and supervision. Nathan may be eligible (now or in the near future) for disability benefits. Perhaps a social worker could advise you on what resources are available in your state. There may also be 'Fragile X' support groups out there that could help you deal with his diagnosis.
Genetic counseling may also be advisable for little Emily too.
Take care
Dear Terri,
Thanks for your visit. My heart goes out to you. Dave and I are learning to look for rainbows in mist of all the rain.
Hugs,
Elizabeth
