Allergy Frustrations

I find it so amazing and frustrating that my children suffer from so many different allergens. Other than penicillin (Dan), Dan & I do not have any allergies. Yet, my children are allergic to everything!

Nathan had an appointment with the ear, nose, and throat specialist about a month ago. He has not been able to breathe out of his nose for years. She put the scope up his nose to check out his adenoids and it was so swollen that she couldn't even get to them. She put him on an antibiotic and nose spray and we went back this past week. He was still swollen up. However, she was able to find a small passageway. It turns out his adenoids were not that enlarged so she feels it's all related to allergies.

He is allergic to dust mites, cats and dogs. Since we don't have a cat or dog, I'm assuming this is due to the dust mites. He has to go for a cat scan and she suggested pursuing allergy shots but she did say it takes a long time to build up an immunity and there is only a 50% chance that it will work!

Emily has wanted a pet for as long as we can remember. She loves animals and is actually, very good with them. However, at her last allergy testing, on top of many foods she is highly allergic to dust mites, all kinds of grasses and trees, cats, dogs, dander, and feathers. This is a very sore spot for her and she really struggles with it.

Stephen has a major allergy to certain trees, grass, apples, and shellfish. Every spring and fall, he walks around with swollen eyes and a runny nose.

UGH!!!!!! I should of gotten a degree in nursing because I would be making a fortune right now with all the medication, shots, and medical procedures that I dole out in a day. My countertop looks like a pharmacy!

Oh well, maybe when the kids are grown, I'll go back to school and become a doctor! LOL!

  1. Terri, I just popped in to say Hello, and I'm so glad I did! My little Jordan apparently needs some allergy testing of some kind, but we don't have insurance at this point, and I don't even know if that is covered or not. Anyway, this past Saturday I had been noticing a big red patch on Jordan's face, I thought at first he had been resting his face on his hand and had left a red mark, but it was there all day. I asked him what he did to his face, and I touched it and realized it was a rash. On closer inspection, I saw it was running down his neck all the way around, and down his back and chest. I have to be so careful with him because not only does he have extremely sensitive skin with allergies that we can't identify, but he also goes around with these dark spots under his eyes from sinus allergies too. Lever 2000 has a new soap for men, which I bought for my hubby (some soaps break him out too), but he had no problem with it. Well, Jordan used it and the rash came up after that. So, I bought him the old soap again and had him shower with it yesterday, and he got out of the shower WORSE! Uuuuggghhh... What does that mean? I've been giving him antihistamine, I changed his soap - it should be better, not WORSE!!! May I just say again...UUUUGGGHHH.

Sorry this is so long! BTW, I love the picture at the top that you have put in for fall, it's just gorgeous!

I love you and miss getting to drop by more often! I'm so behind!

  2. I can relate Terri...my kids are both very ill will allergies a lot of the time. Bethany got tested for grass allergy and it was off the scale! Thankfully they are not allergic to the dog or he would have to go. Sending you empathic hugs...((())) xx

  3. That does sound extremely frustrating! My kids got sniffles and sneezes, but not bad enough to get tested.

Remember that Brady Bunch episode when they thought the dog was Jan's allergy problem? You reminded me of that. I'm so sorry your daughter can't have a pet. I know that's tough for her.

  4. Oh Terri, what a shame. My grandson in Canada has all sorts of allergy problems too.
How hard it must be for Emily not to have a pet. One can only hope that she might grow out of the allergy problem, apparently it can happen.

  5. The only good thing that can come from them having these allergies as kids is that most kids grow out of their allergies,so I pray that will be the case for them. Me, I am opposite I got my allergies when I was a teen and still suffer with them. Hope your having a great day despite this frustration!~Wendy

  6. Yes Terri I am feeling you on the allergy thing! Amber and I both have terrible allergies to animals so we will never have a pet. :0(

Jacob with his peanut allergy is not too bad though. I told him at least it isn't eggs or milk! Praying for your family during this time!

    Hugs,
    Michelle

  7. Poor things! I had to have allergy shots myself (cats, dust, bermuda grass). It's not much fun, but I do think it helped.

  8. April, I would be careful of the type of laundry detergent you use too. Emily has excema the allergist suggested no soap or something like Dove.
