Thrifty Thursday

It's Thrifty Thursday and today I want to talk about seasoning mixes.  There are so many little ways that we can fritter away money and one of them is through the purchase of overpriced seasoning mixes.  You know the ones that come in the little packages?  Taco seasoning, sloppy joe seasonings and others.

I have found that it is much cheaper to put together you own as well as healthier because you are doing without all the preservatives in them.

Here are a few recipes that I use all the time:

Taco Seasoning

2 tsp. instant minced onion
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. cornstarch
1/2 tsp. crushed red peppers
1/2 tsp. garlic pwder
1/4 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. ground cumin

Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix

1 Tbsp. instant minced onion
1 tsp. dried green pepper flakes (optional)
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cornstarch
1/2 tsp. instant minced garlic
1/4 tsp. dry mustard
1/4 tsp. celery seed
1/4 tsp. chili powder

Poultry Seasoning

1 Tbsp. dried rosemary
1 Tbsp. dried sage
1 Tbsp. dried thyme
1 Tbsp. dried marjoram
1 Tbsp. celery seed
3/4 tsp. ground pepper

Shake & Bake Substitute

2 Tbsp. cornmeal
2 Tbsp. flour
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. sage
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. onion powder

Onion Soup Mix (makes 4 servings)
3/4 cup instant minced onion
1/3 cup beef bouillon powder
4 teaspoons onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed celery seed
1/4 teaspoon sugar

So there you are.  You can make your favorite seasonings with a few ingredients that most people already have in their cupboards.  Frugal and healthier!

  2. Thanks for sharing these mixes. I was just thinking the same thing as I shopped this week for groceries, especially the taco seasoning one. There seems to be a lot of sodium in those packets! Thanks again, Happy Thursday.

  3. Thank you so much for sharing these recipes. I have one for onion soup, but not for the others. I also make a cream of soup mix...comes in handy when there is no canned soup in the pantry for casseroles! :)
Thanks again for the helpful hints!

    Blessings!
