A Week of Reflection: The Bread of Life

Matthew 22:19 ~ And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

Bread.

The most basic of foods.

Food that fills and nourishes.  Food that gives life.

Food that expands and fills the belly.

Bread.

Jesus called himself the bread of life.

He is our most basic need.

He is the bread that fills and nourishes. The bread that gives life.

The bread that expands and fills the soul.

However...

Unlike physical bread, he is the bread that lasts. That keeps us filled.

I find it interesting that right before his death he gave his disciples bread.  Not just physical bread but words that would be the bread that filled them after he was gone.  A reminder of how he allowed his body to be broken for us.  A reminder of how belief in him will give us eternal life.  Bread that fills up and lasts.

Today is the day we focus on his death.  We focus on the horrifying pain that he bore for us.  We focus on how his body was broken for us.  And we remember that Jesus is...

Bread.

Sustenance.

Life.
