Snakes!

Warning: Snake pictures ahead.

We have so many different kinds of snakes around here. Most of them are non-poisonous though they look pretty scary. My children spend most of their days hunting around the property trying to find them.

Today they were rewarded with this beauty. It is a black, rat snake. I'm actually glad we have these around because we also have mice and at times, rats.

All three of them know exactly what to do to get a snake calm. It's amazing to watch them take a snake that is afraid and defensive and within minutes get it to calm down so they can hold it and carry it around. I know.....shudder!

Aren't you glad you came over here to see my lovely pictures today? LOL!

  1. I used to have those in my HOUSE when I lived down the hill. Imagine waking up to find one of those in your Kitchen. Nightmare.

  2. LOL! We had an eastern milk snake in the house one day. It was a baby and I thought the kids had left a rubber snake on the floor until I went to pick it up and it moved. Eek!

  3. We do have snakes (adders) in Scotland but I've never seen one. I am terrified of rats so I suppose I would be quite pleased to see a rat snake!!

    Love, Tina :)

  4. Tina, adders would certainly scare me. I'm not afraid of non-poisonous snakes but I'm not so sure about the other kind!

  5. Thankfully I have never seen one in our yard here but we have seen some nonpoisonous ones out and about ~ not my favorite thing! It looks like your kids are enjoying it! As for keeping the rodents down though ~ that's a good thing. We have neighborhood cats roaming around so hopefully they are taking care of them!

    Have a blessed Sunday,

  6. Awesome! We only get the occasional garter (garden?) snake here on Long Island.
I'm pretty sure there aren't any poisonous snakes in New York...are there?
I'm not afraid of snakes. I've had rats for pets, and mice are cute but...
Spiders??? UGH! (Except the tiny one who keeps building webs on my clothesline--he's kinda cute.)

  7. Clare, we do have copperheads and rattlesnakes around here. We are probably about 90 miles north of you so I don't think you have to worry! LOL!

  8. Terri,

We have already seen too many snakes here at the farm..... most snakes around here are poisonous so we make sure when we are out to carry a large walking stick or hoe when out and about....

  9. I am visiting after seeing a post on Purityseekers blog.
I had friends who reward their children for the longest snake caught in the spring it is a neat way to get them interested in nature! Your kids are braver than I am...I would not be able to do that!

  11. Traci,

I would definitely not be happy if we had a ton of poisonous snakes around here.
