Sometimes You Just Need to Stop and Enjoy the Horizon
The way the missions conference works in our denomination is that each district is assigned an International Worker and it's the responsibility of the host church to get him to his next church and on and on. The other day I discovered that our International Worker was not required to get to the next place until late in the afternoon on Thursday. Since Dan had to tutor and our friend needed to be out of the place he was staying by 11 a.m. that meant I was going to have to be the one to entertain him yesterday.
I had planned on getting other things done so to be honest, I wasn't super happy about the whole thing. However, it ended up being a great unexpected change.
I snagged another friend and we drove our International Worker friend around to see all the sights. We took him to see Lake Ontario, we drove to a local salmon hatchery and toured that facility, and then we hit the local waterfalls. He was fascinated with the amount of salmon fishermen that were crowding the local river. This is a huge event that occurs each year and people from all over the country and in some cases, the world, come to fish for salmon who are making their way upstream to spawn. There were about 30-40 fishermen in this one spot in the river.
We took him out to lunch and had a relaxing time chatting over a great meal. It turns out that my friend who came along made a wonderful tour guide as her husband used to work for the New York State parks department and knew all kinds of "insider" information.
I had the best day doing something I don't normally get to do - relax and enjoy the sights. Barry, our International Worker, had a great time too and we got back home to find Dan there and then Dan and I drove him on to his next stop.
I'm thankful that I was forced to take some time and enjoy the day. I often get so busy that I forget to take time to stop and enjoy the horizon.
