Numbering my Days
I opened up my computer calendar this morning and remembered that a new month is upon us. May normally is the month of celebrations - Nathan's birthday is on the 1st, Mother's Day, Memorial Day and Emily's birthday on the 30th. This year everything is so different.
I normally head out to our National Office in Colorado Springs at the end of the month for yearly meetings, but this year they have been canceled. Our district conference was supposed to be this month and that has been postponed until October. My nephew's college graduation and army commissioning service is this weekend and that has gone virtual.
Yesterday, our governor made the decision to keep schools closed through the end of the school year and many high school seniors I know are grieving.
Our world has changed overnight. Things we took for granted have fallen by the wayside. I have moments each day when I really want to put my head down and cry. I try not to give in to those emotions and some days are better than others. Exercise helps. Getting some fresh air helps. Keeping busy with ministry helps. But I don't like this at all.
This morning I was reading in Psalm 90 and it said, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." The one thing that this pandemic is teaching me is that you never know what can happen and not to waste a single second of life.
I've been trying to spend more time in prayer each day. Because I'm starved for human interaction it's easy to fill the time with Facebook or other means, but I want to make the most of this time I've been given. One of my goals for 2020 was pray more and I have been given an opportunity to do just that, and I don't want to waste it.
So while the past few months have felt like an endless counting of days towards the reopening goal, I don't want to just tick days off a calendar. I want to make the most of the time. I want to number my days and draw closer to the One who grants me each new day to appreciate.

That verse has been running on repeat in my mind this year . I too keep reminding myself not to start looking too far ahead but to stay in 'today' as much as possible. Sufficient for today is the goodness thereof - I keep looking at my blessings, - and when I start counting them I see my cup overflows with blessings - and praying for more trust and confidence in God.
