Be Prepared
I found a trail on my phone and so we stopped to pick up some lunch items and then headed out into the wilderness. In my mind I knew I could probably go 4 miles; maybe 5 with no problems so we were good to go.
When we came to a different trail in the woods, we decided to go that way since we knew it looped around. Long story short, the loop was way further than we thought and we ended up hiking 11.5 miles and ascending 700 feet back to where our car was parked.
The longer the hike went on, it got a bit scary as we weren't sure we hadn't made a wrong turn. It was isolated. We only ran into two people the entire day. I started thinking about wildlife though we only saw some chipmunks, birds, and a fat garter snake that I almost stepped on. The thought crossed my mind that we were going to be stuck there overnight. lol
By the end, I could only limp a few feet before I had to stop to rest, and then a few feet more and so on. It took us 5 hours to hike it and that included stops so it really wasn't a bad hike as far as time.
I can barely move today and it will probably take a couple of days to get back to normal. That was the farthest I have ever walked at one time in my life so I'm proud of myself for doing it.
Next time, I will bring a paper map since there was no cell service in the forest so we couldn't tell where we were headed. Also, more water for contingencies.
I should have remembered the boy scout motto of "Be prepared."

That must have been a bit frightening! And a very long hike too.
ReplyDeleteEvery inch of me hurts today but I'm glad I did it. Next time though we will turn back after a few miles. l
