Vacation - Week #1

We are on vacation for the next few weeks and have been trying to do a few different things than our normal hiking trips. We love to hike and will still incorporate that into the weeks, but also wanted to do a few fun things that make it actually feel like vacation.

We started the week by driving 2 1/2 hours to go to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now to be honest, I actually thought I wouldn't enjoy this as much as the guys did. I was wrong. This was 6 floors of exhibits, music, and memories from my growing up years. I loved every minute of this place and it was well worth the money.

Dan and Stephen loved "The Garage" which was a floor dedicated to instruments and being able to play them all. They had a studio where you could play with a live band and they jumped right in to play. Of course, they have both played for years so did great. It was so fun!

On Tuesday, Dan and I went hiking on a local trail and did a 6 mile hike on a very hot and humid day. I love that there are so many beautiful places to hike around here. This was pretty secluded and we only ran into one other guy on a mountain bike. We love meeting people on the trail because hikers are definitely a different type of personality and we've had great chats with some we've met.

Dan and I were also able to use this time to unwind and chat about all types of situations going on in our lives.

Yesterday was a normal sort of day as I had to get a mailing out for a fall retreat I'm organizing. I had to follow up with some time-sensitive correspondence and we had a quarterly meeting with my son's care team. Nathan has a great team of people who work with him, encourage him to meet his life goals, and are in his corner. I love these meetings because they are people who understand his unique challenges and understand how hard it is for the parents. And they are very affirming and consistently remind us that Nathan has a great support system with his family.

In the afternoon we went to visit Dan's dad who took a hard fall on Saturday night. He's bruised and banged up and possibly has a cracked rib. He's finally using a walker instead of just the cane as he is so wobbly and has fallen multiple times.

Today's plan is to hike at a familiar spot, but trying a new trail that we haven't gone on before.

We are heading out tomorrow for the weekend. My stepfather's celebration of life service is on Saturday and a family barbecue on Sunday. We decided to start out tomorrow and spend the night somewhere along the way so we aren't rushing to get there on Saturday. The venue is about 6 hours from us. This year has been one of loss and this is going to be such a bittersweet time this weekend. He was a wonderful man and is missed by all who knew and loved him.

It's hard to believe it's already Thursday. It's been a good week and it's been good to disconnect from the normal busyness.
