Slow Start to the Summer Season
It's been cold and rainy the past few days here in the Northeast. Normally Memorial Day is the start of the summer season and a time for barbecues, picnics, parades and outdoor events. In fact, it's been so dreary that it even slipped my mind that it was a holiday weekend!
I participated in our local farmer's market on Saturday and I was thankful it was indoors as it was a torential downpour when I first arrived. It was kind of a slow day there and I think the rain kept many people away.
I haven't planted anything yet and really need to start thinking about making our yard look welcoming instead of bare and bleak. It's hard to be in the mood for flowers and gardening when it's cold and rainy. I have started some clippings indoors, but that's about it.
I attended a memorial service along with my brother-in-law at the facility my father-in-law is living. It was to honor those who lost loved ones this past year and was a meaningful service. They planted a butterfly bush in the garden in memory of those who passed away.
I went from being so busy in April and early May so it's been nice to end the month on a quiet note. I managed to rearrange my spice cupboards and transfer all of my spices into easy to see labeled jars.
One thing I was excited about was a recent television interview I did about my cookbook and plant-based eating. If you want to watch the interview you can see that here:
She invited me back for another interview in July and I'm looking forward to that. It's been exciting to see that business starting to grow. The director of our farmer's market purchased 100 cookbooks from me and is including them in the community supported agriculture (CSA) boxes that are going out. He also asked me to design some recipe cards to include and is also including bags of granola to go in each one throughout the year. I'm glad people are embracing healthier eating habits.
Speaking of healthier habits, I'm trying to get out of the winter doldrums and get moving more than I have been. Today's plan is to wait a couple more hours until the rain clears out and then go hiking. I love being out in the woods so am looking forward to the first real hike of the season. I walk at our local Audubon center and in our neighborhood, but truly love being out in the forest the best.
I'm looking forward to visiting my daughter this weekend and celebrating her 27th birthday with her. The warm weather is slow getting here, but it will be here soon.
Have a happy Memorial Day and I'm thankful for those who gave their lives for our country. It is a sacrifice that should never be forgotten.
