A Good Beginning

Untitled

I have not home schooled in three years and I have to be honest in saying that I was less than enthusiastic about it.  Even up until this weekend I had this feeling of dread about the whole thing.  Not because I don't think I can do it but because I've been out of it for so long and I really was liking my freedom! :-)

However, today Emily and I are on her second day of school and I am pleasantly surprised.  I forgot how much I really enjoy teaching.  I may be a glutton for punishment but I'm using a unit-study approach which is very teacher intensive but I love it!

It is a character trait curriculum that focuses on a particular character trait within a topic.  So the trait we are working on for the next few months is inquisitiveness.  For the next seven weeks we will be studying scientists and the scientific method.  So far, so good!

I do have to say that it is so much easier focusing on just one instead of two teenagers (one with learning disabiltiies) and a 4th grader which is what I was dealing with the last time I home schooled. One daughter who is a fairly quick learner is a pleasure.

In the past two days we've done math, grammar, writing, science, history, music and art.  I've been able to get some housework done and she is accomplishing quite a bit.  In fact, she's probably accomplished more in the past two days than she would have at school.  That's because generally the schools spend the first few days just going over what they will learn and the rules of the classroom.

So we are off to a good beginning and I'm feeling positive and encouraged.

  1. I am happy that all is going well! We will start schooling next Monday. My daughter Amy has different books for each subject, but for Jacob, we are using a unit study based on the books The Chronicles of Narnia. Hopefully all will go well!
    Enjoy your day Terri!

    Blessings!

  5. That's wonderful Terri! I would imagine she can work on her own a lot, while you do other things. I never homeschooled, but did PLENTY of helping with homework and teaching what was not learned in school. Good luck with the rest of the year.

  6. That's great to hear Terri! I also wanted to comment on your lovely craft work again this week. I'm not so good at doing linky things, so I thought I'd comment here! Very pretty work, as usual, and I'm always amazed at how quickly you produce things! xx
